The Esquirol, formerly known as Santa Maria de Corcó, is a municipality located in the northeast of the region of Osona, between the Cabrerés and Collsacabra. The largest nucleus is the Esquirol, but within its municipal area you can also find the nuclei of Cantonigròs, San Julià de Cabrera and Sant Martí Sescorts.
The village of the Esquirol was created during the fifteenth century as a point in the middle of the royal road that linked Vic with Olot. The name of Santa Maria de Corcó arose during 1743 when the church of Santa Maria de Corcó was moved to the town of the Esquirol.
