Arenys de Mar is a municipality located in the Maresme region, next to the city of Barcelona! This municipality is also located next to the Mediterranean Sea.
Originally, Arenys de Mar was a fishermen’s neighbourhood of Arenys de Munt. It did not become a municipality until 1599, when Gascó de Montcada, Viscount of Cabrera, gave it the title of municipality.

Principal Theatre of Arenys de Mar
The Principal Theatre of Arenys de Mar is a neoclassical building located at Església Street, 45-47, in the centre of Arenys de Mar.
This theatre was inaugurated in 1828, being considered the oldest theatre in Catalonia. Its construction was promoted and financed by Josep Xifré.
Although in 1895 the Principal Theatre of Arenys de Mar was refurbished, this building was in ruins in 1928. That year, in 1928, the Societat Coral la Esperança acquired and remodelled the Principal Theatre of Arenys de Mar.
The Principal Theatre of Arenys de Mar is considered the oldest theatre in Catalonia.
In 1943, the Principal Theatre of Arenys de Mar was transformed into a cinema, and a play was not performed again until 1992. In 2002, this building was ceded to the Town Council of Arenys de Mar, and a major refurbishment was carried out, which was inaugurated in 2005.
The most characteristic feature of the Principal Theatre of Arenys de Mar is its main door, flanked by two large columns. On the first floor there are three windows, in which the central window is subdivided by a small column. The façade of the Principal Theatre of Arenys de Mar ends with a triangular pediment.
