Monastery of Sant Esteve of Banyoles

The Monastery of Sant Esteve of Banyoles is located in the Monestir Square, in the centre of Banyoles.

The origins of the Monastery of Sant Esteve of Banyoles date back to the year 812, when Abbot Bonit founded it. This first monastery was destroyed and rebuilt during the 10th century. During the 15th century the church was affected by earthquakes. Later, during the 17th century, the church was again demolished by French troops. However, the Monastery of Sant Esteve of Banyoles was always being rebuilt.

The present church was built between 1702 and 1740 under the direction of the architect Agustí Soriano and the master builder Salvador Sobreroca de Vallfogona. The interior of the church is the result of a reconstruction carried out by Joan Ostench in 1812.

Inside the church of the Monastery of Sant Esteve of Banyoles is the Gothic altarpiece of the Virgin of the staircase, a work by Joan Antigó!

This church, in a marked neoclassical style, consists of a single nave with side chapels. In addition, there are three apses at the chancel. One of the curiosities of the church of the Monastery of Sant Esteve of Banyoles is the Gothic doorway that has been preserved.

Inside the church, various Gothic elements are still preserved, such as the altar of the Virgin of L’Escala, or a chest by Francesc Artau.

Attached to the church is the current cloister, which occupies the same space as the old Romanesque cloister. In the cloister we can still see different pilasters with Corinthian capitals from the old Romanesque cloister.
