Mitjavia Cross of Gurb

If you don’t know what to do in Gurb, and you want to discover this town, from COOLTUR Cultural Tourism we recommend you to visit the Mitjavia Cross of Gurb!

Gurb is a municipality located in the centre of the Plana de Vic, in the county of Osona.

Although Gurb has some urban centres, we can say that this municipality is characterised by having a dispersed population within its municipal boundaries. This dispersion means that heritage elements of great value can be found anywhere in the municipality.

Furthermore, Gurb is a municipality with a markedly rural character. This character makes it easy to find places of great natural beauty in Gurb.

Mitjavia Cross of Gurb

The Mitjavia Cross of Gurb is a cross located next to Mas Puigllong, in the municipality of Gurb. This cross is located next to the old royal road that crossed the municipality of Gurb from south to north.

The Mitjavia Cross of Gurb is located at a crossroads. Initially, at this point there was a boundary cross which was destroyed during the Spanish Civil War. Later, in 1988, the current Mitjavia Cross of Gurb was erected.

The Mitjavia Cross of Gurb consists of a stepped base supported by a monolith. On this monolith is the inscription “Aquest monument en recordança de la Creu de Mitjavia que existí fins l’any 1936. Fou inaugurada el dia 22 de maig de 1988” (This monument in memory of the Cross of Mitjavia that existed until 1936. It was inaugurated on 22nd May 1988). On this monolith there is also the inscription “Vianant que la Santa Creu sigui el guió del teu esperit. Ramon d’Abadal i de Vinyals” (May the Holy Cross be the script of your spirit. Ramon d’Abadal i de Vinyals).

Some believe that a second Roman road that linked Osona with Cerdanya passed through this point. It must be said, however, that it has not been archaeologically proven.
