Church of Sant Vicenç of Besalú

The church of Sant Vicenç of Besalú is located between Sant Vicenç Street and Safont Street, in the town centre of Besalú.

The first documented mention of the church of Sant Vicenç of Besalú dates back to 977. In this mention, Count Miró Bonfill cedes this church to the church of Santa Maria.

The current building of the church of Sant Vicenç of Besalú is the result of a rebuilding carried out between the 12th and 13th centuries. This church has three naves with a transept and three semicircular apses. The central apse is decorated with a frieze of blind arches.

The church of Sant Vicenç of Besalú is a transitional building between Romanesque and Gothic art!

On one side of the church of Sant Vicenç of Besalú we can see one of the entrance doors to this building. This is a doorway with a marked late Romanesque style, with great decoration both in the capitals and in the archivolts.

On the main façade of this church, we can see another entrance door. This is a doorway with a semicircular arch, framed by a dust cap and two columns with capitals. On the tympanum of this entrance door we can still see the remains of an ancient painting that we suppose represents the descent.

At the top of the main façade there is a large pointed arch window. Inside this window there is a rose window and four small rounds arches.

To the right of the main façade of the church of Sant Vicenç of Besalú is a large bell tower, built during the 17th century.
