Church of Sant Nicolau of Girona

The church of Sant Nicolau of Girona is a spectacular Romanesque church located in Santa Llúcia Street, in the center of the city of Girona.

The first documented mentions of the church of Sant Nicolau of Girona date back to 1135, when it was built as a funerary chapel of the monastery of Sant Pere de Galligants.

Although it was originally a circular church, the present church of Sant Nicolau of Girona has a single nave with a three-lobed chancel. In the transept of the church there is an octagonal dome. The apses of this church are decorated with friezes of Lombard arches between lesenes. The present door of the church of Sant Nicolau of Girona was opened in 1763.

With the disentailment of Mendizábal in 1835, this church became private property. At first it was used as a leather warehouse, and later it became a saw mill. In 1936, the church of Sant Nicolau of Girona was acquired by the city council of Girona and was restored in 1942 and 1977.
