Vilassar de Mar is a municipality located next to Barcelona, in the Maresme region.

Originally, Vilassar de Mar was the fishermen’s neighbourhood of Vilassar de Dalt. It was not until 1784 that Vilassar de Mar became an independent municipality.

Although Vilassar de Mar does not have a large municipal area, in this municipality you can find natural places of great beauty. In fact, in Vilassar de Mar there are some of the quietest and most family-friendly beaches in Catalonia!

But you can also find a great number of heritage elements of incalculable value!

Can Matamala

On the seafront in Vilassar de Mar, specifically at Sant Pau Street, 7, you can see a modernist style building, Can Matamala.

This building was constructed at the beginning of the 20th century. The architect in charge of designing Can Matamala was Eduard Ferrés Puig.

Can Matamala consists of a ground floor, two upper floors and a roof terrace. On the first floor there is a tribune supported by different pillars.

The most outstanding feature of Can Matamala is the ornamental use of ceramics, especially white tiles. This decoration covers a large part of the elements that make up the building, such as the balustrades, the walls, the decorative garlands, the pillars, etc.

At the top, at Can Matamala, you can see ceramic decoration in different colours. At this point is also the cornice, which is supported by different corbels. In addition, on the roof railing there are four pinnacles crowned by spheres, as well as decorative borders that outline the whole.
